Sparta, North Carolina lies at the crossroads of US Route 21 and NC Highway 18 — and is the center and focus of community life for Alleghany county. The county is located entirely within the “Blue Ridge” Appalachian Mountains region of North Carolina, and is bordered by Grayson County, Virginia to the north; and Surry, Wilkes and Ashe Counties (North Carolina) to the east, south and west respectively. Alleghany’s seven townships (Cherry Lane, Cranberry, Glade Creek, Piney Creek, Prathers Creek and Whitehead) are located atop a rolling plateau that ranges from 2,500 feet to 4,000 feet above sea level.
