•19451945 Four days after the initial landings on Iwo Jima, 1st Lieutenant Harold G. Schrier leads 40 men from Company E, 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, up Mt. Suribachi to secure the crest and raise the small American flag given them by battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Chandler Johnson. Within an hour, the patrol reaches the rim of the crater. After a short fire-fight, the small American flag, attached to an iron pipe, is raised over the island. |

•19911991 The I Marine Expeditionary Force and coalition forces begin a ground assault on Iraqi defenses in the final chapter of Operation Desert Storm. The 1st and 2d Marine Divisions storm the teeth of Iraqi positions while heavily-armored allied forces flank their defenses and assault from the rear. In 100 hours, U.S. and allied forces defeat the Iraqi Army. |

•19911991 Operation Desert Storm ends. I Marine Expeditionary Force has a strength of more than 92,000 — making Operation Desert Storm the largest Marine Corps operation in history. 24 Marines are killed in action during the Gulf War.

The focus of the History Division is, naturally enough, research into events long since past — and events of more recent years — namely

Operation Enduring Freedom have not yet received the full benefit of the History Division’s analysis. Every effort will be made to update the calendar as the actions of the men and women who now uphold the best traditions of United States Marines — and carry the Corps’ colors in the service of their country into the towns and cities of Iraq and through the mountains of Afghanistan become known.
