			1 •1967 1967 Elements of the 3d Marine Division begin Operation Prairie II in Quang Tri province. 5	6 •ANGIE BRINEGAR BIRTHDAY ANGIE BRINEGAR BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! •1968 1968 Two reduced Marine battalions, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (with two companies), and 2d Battalion, 5th Marines (with three), recapture Hue's hospital, jail, and provincial headquarters. It takes three more weeks of intense house-to-house fighting, and nearly a thousand Marines killed and wounded, before the imperial city is secured.	7	8	9	10	11 •1922 1922 Brigadier General John H. Russell is appointed U.S. High Commissioner and personal representative of the President to the government of Haiti. The nine-year assignment places this future Commandant in supreme command of both the occupying American force and the Haitian Gendarmerie.
12	13	14	15 •Valentines Day Valentines Day •1898 1898 28 Marines and 232 seamen lose their lives when the battleship USS Maine sinks following an explosion in mysterious circumstances in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. "Remember the Maine!" becomes a battle cry of the Spanish-American war that erupts the following April.	16	17 •BILL SEBASTIAN BIRTHDAY BILL SEBASTIAN BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! •1967 1967 The first full day of Operation Deckhouse VI, which lasts until March 3rd, is conducted near Quang Ngai city. The Special Landing Force (BLT Y4 and HMM-363) accounts for 280 enemy killed.	18
19	20	21	22	23 •1945 1945 Four days after the initial landings on Iwo Jima, 1st Lieutenant Harold G. Schrier leads 40 men from Company E, 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, up Mt. Suribachi to secure the crest and raise the small American flag given them by battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Chandler Johnson. Within an hour, the patrol reaches the rim of the crater. After a short fire-fight, the small American flag, attached to an iron pipe, is raised over the island.	24 •1991 1991 The I Marine Expeditionary Force and coalition forces begin a ground assault on Iraqi defenses in the final chapter of Operation Desert Storm. The 1st and 2d Marine Divisions storm the teeth of Iraqi positions while heavily-armored allied forces flank their defenses and assault from the rear. In 100 hours, U.S. and allied forces defeat the Iraqi Army.	25
26	27	28 •1991 1991 Operation Desert Storm ends. I Marine Expeditionary Force has a strength of more than 92,000 — making Operation Desert Storm the largest Marine Corps operation in history. 24 Marines are killed in action during the Gulf War.	29

A Note: historical dates and details of events significant to the United States Marine Corps are taken in part from the list compiled by the United States Marine Corps History Division. The focus of the History Division is, naturally enough, research into events long since past — and events of more recent years — namely Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Operation Enduring Freedom have not yet received the full benefit of the History Division’s analysis. Every effort will be made to update the calendar as the actions of the men and women who now uphold the best traditions of United States Marines — and carry the Corps’ colors in the service of their country into the towns and cities of Iraq and through the mountains of Afghanistan become known.
